A SOCIOLINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF INTRA-SENTENTIAL CODE MIXING IN THE UNITED WAVE FOOTBALL PODCAST

Abstrak

Penelitian ini mengkaji penggunaan campur kode intra-kalimat dalam episode post-match review podcast sepak bola The United Wave dari perspektif sosiolinguistik. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan data yang diperoleh dari satu episode podcast yang membahas ulasan pertandingan sepak bola. Data penelitian terdiri atas lima belas tuturan yang mengandung campur kode bahasa Indonesia–Inggris, yang ditranskripsi dan dianalisis menggunakan kerangka teoretis campur kode Hoffman (1991). Analisis difokuskan pada pengidentifikasian jenis campur kode yang muncul dalam tuturan post-match review. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa seluruh data termasuk ke dalam kategori campur kode intra-kalimat, yaitu penyisipan kata atau frasa bahasa Inggris ke dalam struktur kalimat bahasa Indonesia. Temuan ini mencerminkan kompetensi bilingual penutur serta pengaruh terminologi sepak bola global yang lazim digunakan dalam analisis pascapertandingan untuk menyampaikan konsep taktik, evaluasi, dan ekspresi sikap. Selain itu, karakter podcast post-match review yang bersifat santai dan dialogis mendorong penggunaan bahasa secara spontan, sehingga campur kode berfungsi sebagai strategi komunikatif yang efektif, bukan sebagai bentuk ketidakmampuan berbahasa. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memperkaya kajian sosiolinguistik mengenai penggunaan campur kode dalam podcast sepak bola pascapertandingan di Indonesia.

This study investigates the use of intra-sentential code mixing in a post-match review episode of The United Wave football podcast from a sociolinguistic perspective. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were obtained from one podcast episode discussing a football match review. Fifteen utterances containing Indonesian–English code mixing were transcribed and analyzed using Hoffman’s (1991) theoretical framework on code mixing. The analysis focuses on identifying the type of code mixing occurring in the podcast’s post-match commentary. The findings indicate that all identified data fall under intra-sentential code mixing, in which English words or phrases are embedded within Indonesian sentence structures. This pattern reflects the speakers’ bilingual competence and the influence of global football terminology commonly used in post-match analysis to express tactical concepts, evaluations, and stances. Moreover, the informal and conversational nature of post-match review podcasts encourages spontaneous language use, allowing code mixing to function as an effective communicative strategy rather than a marker of linguistic inadequacy. This study contributes to sociolinguistic research by highlighting code mixing practices in Indonesian football post-match review podcasts.
